Why Does Trinidad Need A New Library?
For many years our branch library shared space in a local church. When the church was remodeled, the library found a "temporary" home in a room at Trinidad School. While allowing library services to continue for our area, the schoolroom location underserves the children, seniors, families, and visitors who need adequate and accessible library services.
Here are some reasons the Trinidad area needs a new library:
- Access is difficult for some seniors, parents with strollers, and people with mobility problems due to school fencing and entrances.
- Library hours are restricted because of school schedules.
- According to a Humboldt County Library survey, our area needs a 2000+sq. ft. library; the current room is only 900 sq. ft.
- Some childrens' reading programs cannot be held because of school hours.
- Library usage has fallen off since we moved to the schoolroom.
- In 2007-2008 Trinidad School's enrollment increased. If enrollment continues to increase there is the future possibility that the District will need to convert the existing library room back into a classroom.
